Miracle on Dead Man's Curve

Today's Miracle Monday is a testimony of thankfulness from Sister Kathy Golling.

One evening, not long after my son had gotten his driver’s license, I received a phone call that every parent dreads. It was the police telling me my son had been in an accident, and when the officer told me the location, my heart sank. It was on a bend of a local road known to everyone in our town as Dead Man’s Curve.

Throughout the years, many people have been killed on that bend. When I pulled up to the site, I saw my son standing by the side of the road talking to the police officer, his car resting against the guardrail without the sign of a dent. The outside of this very sharp bend is a vertical hillside, and the inside of the bend has a guardrail bordering it. The police officer told me that my son had taken the bend too fast and had ridden the vertical hillside around the outside of the bend, crossed over the road, and came to rest gently against the guardrail.

When he began to write up the report, he kept looking at the hillside, then the car, shaking his head. After several attempts at writing and looking back and forth at the hillside and the car, he finally said to me, “There’s no way I can write this report because there's no physical way this could have happened! If he was going fast enough to ride the vertical hillside without flipping the car, then he should've smashed into the guardrail. If he was going slow enough to just rest against the guardrail, then he should've flipped his car on the hillside.”

Then he said the words that really gave me a chill. “I have been to many accidents at this spot, and it is always to scrape someone off the road, not to fill out a report. I can’t even fill out a report because there is no physical way this accident could have happened.”

My son then told him it was because God had been with him and spared his life. I will never forget the look on that officer’s face as he shrugged, shook his head, and put his clipboard away.

As an extra note, we found out later that one of my son's friends was driving towards the same bend from the other direction at the same time. She pulled over right before the bend to make a phone call. Had she not pulled over, my son would've hit her head on.

What would we do as parents without knowing that our children are safe in God’s hands?

Can You Say Amen to That?
