Is It the End of the World as We Know It?
2 Nephi 4:34 – "O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever. I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm."
2 Nephi 28:31 – "Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost."
Jeremiah 17:5-8 – "Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit."
By the time this blog article is published, the much-maligned presidential campaign will be over, and we will have a new president-elect. In Texas, like many states, you can vote early. I decided to do so today, Nov. 3. I made it a matter a prayer and made my choice based on how I felt the Holy Ghost was directing me.
Prior to this, I've thought about how this election could be a life-altering event for our country. I pondered how my family and I would be personally affected. Then, these scriptures came to me. I cannot put my trust in man because no matter how good someone is, he or she is still human and will fail at some point. That's just who we are.
Jesus, however, never fails. He's always there, always extending His hand of love and mercy. These scriptures, especially the passage from Jeremiah, reflect that. I also began to look back to 2008. Many at that time thought our country was at a similar crossroads. I wondered then, too, how might my family and I be affected by the population's decision. I can truly say that we are personally better off today than we were eight years ago.
That has nothing to do with who was elected to any office but everything to do with the Lord. He's done so much for me that I'm not worthy of at all. Yet He loves me enough to help me take care of my family and financial responsibility to the church. He's blessed my marriage, and He's given us a miracle son. All of that while our government has done some very, let's say, interesting things.
Regardless of who won this election, I won't worry and think it's the end of the world as I know it. I'll trust in God and let my faith and hope be where it belongs, with the Lord Jesus Christ.
