Pray for the President

Pray for the President

Growing up listening to the wise testimonies of my elder brothers and sisters, one that rings true and has always stayed with me is that of the late Sister Pauline Kowalczyk. Sister Pauline immigrated to the U.S. from Poland. Barely 5 feet tall, she frequently wore a long coat and was known for her fashionable hats. Most importantly, she gave a powerful testimony, greater than her stature.

Sister Pauline cherished her right to vote. After election cycles, she would boldly say in broken English, “Pray for the president!” I can hear her voice as I quote the words.

Is It the End of the World as We Know It?

2 Nephi 4:34"O Lord, I have trusted in thee, and I will trust in thee forever. I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh; for I know that cursed is he that putteth his trust in the arm of flesh. Yea, cursed is he that putteth his trust in man or maketh flesh his arm."

2 Nephi 28:31"Cursed is he that putteth his trust in man, or maketh flesh his arm, or shall hearken unto the precepts of men, save their precepts shall be given by the power of the Holy Ghost."

Jeremiah 17:5-8"Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit."

Politics, Liberty, and Our Lord

Politics, Liberty, and Our Lord

Politics can be a touchy subject. When I worked in Pittsburgh, I sometimes focused on public policy and had interactions with local politicians. At the mere mention of the name of a local policymaker, I could set loose on a rant about anything concerning his/her affiliation, political agenda, or even personal character. Looking back, it was slightly ridiculous.

Notice where we are at today — two days removed from a national election that has been building over the last 17 months. Over the course of this time, we have seen many social issues arise that have been at the forefront of speeches, debates, and other propaganda. Technology has enabled us to see these issues every moment of every day, even as they are occurring. It’s been an environment we have been submerged in for more than a year, and now we await the implementation of the result in January.

The Olympians of Scripture

The Olympians of Scripture

Are you still watching Olympic replays and highlights even though the games ended last week? We witnessed some remarkable feats at the Summer Olympic games. We've seen plenty of pictures that show the thrill of victory, and some, unfortunately, the agony of defeat.

This got me thinking about what sports some of the people from scripture would have participated in if the Olympics were held in those days. Leave your ideas in the comments below…

True Universal Health Care

Before I begin, I want you to know this is not a political blog post. With that said, unless you have been living under a rock (see, there I go again with the clichés) for the last few years or you just decided to not turn on a TV or read any type of news article, you know that the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) was made law, and some of it started to go into effect on October 1.
